Wellington Harbour Ferries

Ferries operated on Wellington Harbour from 1893 to 1948. In 1989 East by West Ferries began operating commuter ferries on Wellington Harbour again, mainly from Days Bay to the Wellington city centre and to Somes Island. The catamaran Cobar Cat was built specifically for Wellington Harbour in 2005. It is named after the steam ferry Cobar, which ran between Wellington and Days Bay / Eastbourne from 1906 to 1948. The new ferry's hull is of timber composite construction. [Apr 2010].

The Ika Rere entered service in 2022. It was the first fully electric ferry in the southern hemisphere. The name Ika Rere means flying fish in te reo Māori. Here it is at ist Queen's Wharf in central Wellington, where it also is charged. [Oct 2023].
