Worldwide

Maersk Line: The world's biggest container carrier. This Danish company is known for its aggressive expansion and fierce independence. In 2006 it took over the container shipping company P&O Nedlloyd. Its parent is also involved in oil exploration, air transport and medical equipment.
Mediterranean Shipping Company: This Swiss-Italian container shipping company is relatively new. Begun by its current chief executive it has grown remarkably in recent years and now offers services all over the world.
CMA CGM: Large French container carrier mainly covering the globe through alliances.
Hapag-Lloyd: Hapag Lloyd took over CP Ships in 2006 and since then has an increased presence in New Zealand, offering world-wide services, but especially to Europe and America.

Europe

Seatrade: Independent reefer service. Beside refrigerated cargo these ships also carry some containers and breakbulk cargo.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen: This Norwegian company operates only RoRo ships. On its round-the-world service it carries vehicles and project cargo along its route. This is a premium high-quality service.

Asia

Swire Shipping: Owned by the China Navigation Company, this shipping line operates multi-purpose ships between Asia and New Zealand. The vessels carry containers, breakbulk and project cargo. This company also offers services to and from the Pacific Island and Australia.
Nippon Yusen Kaisha: Large Japanese container line. Its network not only covers Asia, but through transhipment services also extends to other parts of the world.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines: Large Japanese shipping line, operating different types of ships, including coastal services in Japan. It offers a container service to New Zealand as part of an alliance.
COSCO: Chinese state shipping line. As part of its container shipping network, its ships also reach New Zealand.
PIL: Pacific International Line. This Singaporean container line, also operates a service to New Zealand with hubbing opportunities from Singapore.
OOCL: In 2006 vessels of the Hong Kong shipping company OOCL started calling in New Zealand as part of a Vessel Sharing Agreement. The company offers services throughout Asia and from there along all important East-West trades.
America
Hamburg Süd: This German shipping company is quite prominent in South America, and now has an independent service from New Zealand and Australia to the USA and Europe. In 2006 it has also expanded services to Asia taking over routes from FESCO.
Australia
ANL: Austrlia National Line. This company is now actually owned by the French line CMA CGM. It offers container services around Australia and links in with the world-wide network of CMA CGM.
Pacific Islands
Pacific Forum Line: This shipping line is owned by the Pacific Forum nations and based in New Zealand. It offers services throughout the Pacific Islands, concentrating on container transport, but also offering other modes.
Pacific Direct Line: A family owned company, though certainly not the most regarded among shipping lines. This service connects New Zealand with the Pacific Islands.
